Hurricane Florence Preparedness

When making preparations for Hurricane Florence, please consider and take necessary actions to mitigate potential hazards for property located in the mapped FEMA Floodway.

Consider materials and equipment stored on site. Materials that are buoyant, flammable, toxic, hazardous, or explosive can cause major damage in a flooding event. Ensure that flammable, toxic, hazardous or explosive materials are relocated and that other material and equipment is firmly anchored to prevent flotation or movement, or remove it from the area immediately.

Activate plans in place to remove temporary structures and/or vehicles, such as recreational vehicles, construction trailers from the mapped FEMA floodway/floodplain.

Inspect flood vents and make sure they are working properly and are unobstructed.

Locate and plan to deploy flood shields on the building openings.

To confirm whether property is located in a mapped FEMA floodway/floodplain, you can access the Virginia Flood Risk Information System Map by following the link:  http://cmap2.vims.edu/VaFloodRisk/vfris2.html
