African American Historical Newspapers

African American Historical Newspapers
Roanoke Couple
Norfolk Journal and Guide (July 3, 1948)

This past year we added an African American Historical Newspaper database.  This database includes thousands of articles relating to Roanoke (general news, wedding announcements, obituaries, social happenings, etc).

Newspapers Include:
Atlanta Daily World (1931-2003)
Baltimore Afro-American (1893-1988)
Chicago Defender (1909-1975)
Norfolk Journal and Guide (1916-2003)
Pittsburgh Courier (1911-2002)

It can be accessed either from a City library or from home with your library card number (barcode).  This database as well as others are listed at the bottom of the Virginia Room webpage.

Upcoming Giveaway

In October, we will be giving away two AncestryDNA kits donated by Ancestry.  Further information will be given in upcoming email alerts.
