On Wednesday, Oct. 10, Roanoke Mayor Sherman Lea and Vice-Mayor Joe Cobb will join the Trust for Public Land, National Recreation and Park Association, and Urban Land Institute in celebrating the one-year anniversary of the 10-Minute Walk Campaign, highlighting the importance of parks and public green spaces to the quality of life in the City of Roanoke. To do so, the Mayor and Vice-Mayor will participate in the first national “Walk to a Park Day” as follows: Mayor Lea will walk the greenway at Countryside Park, starting at the Countryside Shelter at noon. Vice-Mayor Joe Cobb will walk the greenway from Vic Thomas Park through Wasena Park, starting at the Wasena Park Bridge by the parking lot at 9 a.m.

Citizens are encouraged to participate by joining the Mayor or Vice-Mayor as they take a short 10-minute walk to a park, or by walking to a park on their own. Send a photo from your walk to the city's Facebook Page ( or by email to to be featured on the city's social media accounts.

“Roanoke manages 60 parks, six greenways, and more than 100 miles of natural surface trails,” said Mayor Lea. “These parks and green spaces link our neighborhoods to the city, which is a major benefit to Roanoke’s quality of life. I can’t think of a better way to show support for them than to participate in this walk.”

National “Walk to a Park Day” is part of a movement to make sure everyone in America has a great park within a 10-minute walk of home. By joining this walk, the Mayor and Vice-Mayor are partnering with more than 200 mayors across the country to support the ambitious goal that everyone in the country, and all residents of Roanoke, should live within a 10-minute walk of a high-quality park or green space.
