[ARCHIVED] Moonshot Moment Reading Rocket to Stop in Roanoke

Moonshot Rocket Bus3

On Tuesday, July 31, the Moonshot Moment Reading Rocket (bus) from Indian River County, Fla. will make a stop in Roanoke to present the national “Voices: A Community Tapestry of Stories” project, in support of Roanoke’s  Star City Reads program. The Rocket will be at the Elmwood Park Art Walk from 10 a.m. until noon. Roanoke community members are invited to visit the bus to share their stories of “where they are from” and “what they dream of.”

“Voices: A Community Tapestry of Stories” is an arts and literacy campaign to promote the awareness of our nation’s literacy crisis, and to create collective impact throughout communities by lifting up voices. Participants are invited to fill out a tapestry square to tell their stories. The tapestry squares are then woven together as a large moving art installation. Sections of the Voices Tapestry will be on view during the visit at the Art Walk.

Established in 2017, the Florida-based Moonshot Reading Rocket arts-literacy project has collected stories from Colorado, Missouri, Mississippi, Arkansas, Alabama, Georgia and Florida. It is part of Indian River County’s Campaign for Grade-Level Reading initiative, Moonshot Moment. The Moonshot Moment bus will be stopping in Roanoke on its way back to Florida from the Campaign for Grade-Level Reading’s annual conference in Philadelphia.  Track the tour online by following #GLRWeek and #SpotTheRocket or visiting facebook.com/moonshotmoment or facebook.com/StarCityReads.
