[ARCHIVED] Important Changes Made to Roanoke’s Single-Stream Recycling Program

Roanoke, VA -- Due to recent changes in the recycling market, higher standards have been implemented nationally for recycling. As a result, the City of Roanoke’s recycling vendor, Recycling Disposal Solutions (RDS), is no longer accepting Plastics #3 through #7. In addition to eliminating those items from our single-stream recycling collection, it is also very important to reduce overall recycling contamination. Recycling contamination is what happens when an item that isn’t recyclable winds up in the recycling bin. Contamination can lead to the rejection of the recycled materials, which may result in additional expenses for the city.

Recycle these items:

  • Aluminum beverage cans, steel, and tin cans
  • Glass bottles, containers, and jars
  • Mixed paper, newspaper, and magazines
  • Cardboard and pizza boxes (with no food scraps)
  • Plastic water bottles
  • Milk jugs Plastic jugs, shampoo/soap bottles
  • Laundry detergent and cleaning supply containers
  • Plastics #1 and #2

DO NOT recycle these items:

  • Plastic grocery bags or Ziploc bags
  • Plastic wrap
  • Styrofoam
  • Plastic toys and furniture
  • Wood pieces
  • Clothing and fabric
  • Food waste
  • Rope, wire, and hoses
  • Drinking straws
  • CDs, DVDs, Discs
  • Vending cups
  • Fiberglass Plastic pipes and PVC
  • Tupperware
  • Empty medicine bottles
  • Plastics #3 - #7

Thank you for your help and participation!
