[ARCHIVED] Snow Removal Underway on Primary City Streets

Roanoke, VA – The City of Roanoke has deployed plows, and snow removal will focus on primary streets for the next 24 hours until the snow ends and primaries are clear, per established protocol. Once primaries are clear, crews will transition into residential streets.  Residents should be aware that a section of Colonial Avenue (beyond Virginia Western) has been closed. This segment is problematic due to slope and other factors.

Calls or texts to 911 should be reserved for medical, fire, or police emergencies only. Please do not call 911 or 211 for specific information related to snow removal. Instead, residents should call the Citizen Call Center at 853-2000, Option 8 for general information on the status of road conditions or to report a street that needs to be plowed.

Residents shoveling snow from their driveways are asked to refrain from pushing snow into the street as it impedes the work of snow plows and may be inadvertently pushed back into the driveway. To minimize the amount of snow across the driveway, shovel snow to the right side of the driveway (looking at the street.) Clearing a space immediately to the left of the driveway can provide a space for the snow already on the face of the plow and further lessen the amount of snow across the driveway.

More information about the snow removal process may be found on the city’s website at http://www.roanokeva.gov/772/Snow-Removal-Process.
