[ARCHIVED] New Art Coming to Elmwood Park in 2017

Roanoke, VA - The Art in Roanoke (AIR) exhibit in Elmwood Park will get a new look in the spring of 2017. The Roanoke Arts Commission has issued a call for artists to locate nine new temporary works along the Art Walk on Bullitt Avenue.

The city’s first exhibit on the Art Walk, themed “The Natural City” ended on Nov. 15. The new theme, “City in Motion,” represents the revitalization of downtown Roanoke over the last 25 years.

"We welcome any opportunity to bring public art to Downtown Roanoke. Public Art gives people the opportunity to experience the city in a new and dynamic way,” said Tina Workman, President of Downtown Roanoke, Inc.

Recently all the pieces, except two, on the Art Walk were picked up by the artists as the term of the loan for “The Natural City” expired on Nov. 15. The city purchased Descending Night, created by Jack Howard Potter, with the generous support of Downtown Roanoke Inc. and this work will remain on the Art Walk. Rawrenok, created by Anthony Heinz May, was donated to the city by the artist and will eventually be moved to a site along one of the city’s greenways.

A panel of city representatives, Arts Commission members, and citizens will select the sculptures for the new exhibitions. The deadline for entries is Feb. 6, 2017, at 5 p.m.
