[ARCHIVED] City Unveils Little Free Libraries Public Art

Roanoke, VA – On Wednesday, Oct. 19, the city unveiled one of six Little Free Libraries next to the Hurt Park Bus Shelter. The Roanoke Arts Commission selected artist Dan Kuehl, a teacher at Breckinridge Middle School, to create six Little Free Libraries out of newspaper boxes donated by The Roanoke Times. According to Kuehl, each box is designed with energy and a life of lines and color. Kuehl also incorporated images familiar to Roanoke into the designs. Kuehl previously designed the Leaf sculpture that sits at the Art Walk in Elmwood Park.

The little libraries have been placed in the following locations:

• Robert Keeley Healing Garden at Carilion Clinic
• Melrose Village Center
• Riverland Road Village Center
• Golden Park
• Thrasher Park
• Next to Hurt Park Bush Shelter

Designated stewards from neighborhood organizations and civic groups will monitor each little library for appropriate materials and replace books as needed.

Part of a nationwide moment, Little Free Libraries encourage people to take a book and/or leave a book for others to enjoy. The little libraries will be registered with the national organization littlefreelibraries.org.
