[ARCHIVED] Citizens Asked to Use Caution at Downtown Traffic Signals, Railroad Crossings

Roanoke, VA -- Roanoke Fire-EMS and Police, as well as Appalachian Power crews are responding to an underground transformer blowout in the downtown area.

Drivers coming into the downtown area are asked to use caution as many roads are closed off because of this emergency. If you come to a traffic signal that is not in operation, please treat that intersection as a four-way stop. In addition, streets that intersect with railroad crossings should be treated as two-way stops. Drivers should stop, look both ways, and yield to any train cars passing.

Employees who work in downtown businesses are asked to avoid using elevators, in case any power outages occur. On-site security officers at downtown businesses are asked to ensure that employees use stairways to get from floor to floor.
