[ARCHIVED] City Invites Public Input for Update to Wireless Telecommunications Facilities Policy

Roanoke, VA – The city’s Planning, Building, and Development Department is working with a consultant to revise its Wireless Telecommunications Facilities Policy, and to draft changes to the related provisions of the Zoning Ordinance for City Council’s consideration. The city will assess industry changes including technology, Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulations, and customer demand in order to revise its policy. Public input is a crucial component to the policy update, and the city will host two drop-in sessions on Thursday, April 7, to ensure all interests are heard and well represented in the final product:

Thursday, April 7, Drop-in Sessions:
12–1:30 p.m. and 6-7:30 p.m.
Planning and Development Conference Room, Room 181
Noel C. Taylor Municipal Building, 215 Church Ave. SW
Use the 2nd Street entrance, conference room immediately on the right.
(The same information will be provided at both sessions)

The proliferation of smart phones and other wireless devices requiring data streaming demands that wireless providers provide more system capacity than ever to deliver quality service to their customers. This has altered the way providers evaluate their networks, as well as the number of sites and the type of technology they use. These changes make it necessary to update the city’s Wireless Telecommunications Facilities Policy and review the current provisions of our zoning ordinance. By updating this policy, the city wishes to guide the development of new facilities in a way that achieves the capacity and coverage goals of the wireless providers and wireless device users while minimizing the visual impact to the community.
