[ARCHIVED] Public Meeting Scheduled: Introduction to Proposed Norwich Nomination on November 6, 2023

A Public Meeting to introduce the proposed Norwich Nomination as a National Register of Historic Places and Virginia Landmarks Register listing has been scheduled.

When: November 6, 2023, at 6:00 PM
Where: Raleigh Court Library
              2112 Grandin Road SW

The City of Roanoke has obtained a matching grant through the Virginia Department of Historic Resources (DHR) to fund a reconnaissance-level survey of approximately 300 properties in the Norwich area. The tentative proposed boundary is generally located between the Roanoke River to the north, Memorial Avenue to the east, Mountain View Terrace to the south, Bridge Street and Irvine Streets to the west, per the map below.

Inclusion of these properties in the Virginia and the National registers of historic places would enable property owners or investors to make improvements to their buildings using incentives such as state and federal historic rehabilitation tax credits, as well as the city’s real estate tax abatement program.

The City of Roanoke has hired Kraemer Design Group, LLC, from Detroit, Michigan, to assist the city in conducting a survey of the properties and to represent the City of Roanoke in the nomination process with Virginia DHR. The Kraemer Design Group, LLC, representatives will soon be conducting survey of the considered properties by taking photos of the existing structure(s) on-site and gathering the information necessary for including these properties in the Norwich National Register of Historic Places and Virginia listing. The active survey and nomination portion of the project is expected to be completed in March 2024.
