Roanokers take great pride in the 100-foot, man-made Star perched atop Mill Mountain. With people from all over the County visiting the Roanoke area this weekend for the 2021 Carilion Clinic IRONMAN 70.3 Virginia’s Blue Ridge triathlon, the City of Roanoke will show off its beloved Star by keeping it illuminated overnight from Saturday (June 5) at dusk, to Sunday (June 6) at 6 a.m. The Star is one of the most photographed attractions in the area and the scenic overlook at the base of the structure is a popular stop for an incredible view of the region. IRONMAN race activities this weekend will include a swim event at Carvins Cove Reservoir; a bike race on roadways in the City and neighboring localities, and on the Blue Ridge Parkway; and a run that will follow the paved Roanoke River Greenway path along the banks of the Roanoke River. By keeping the Star lit, it is our hope that visitors who come for the triathlon will take notice of this iconic landmark in our beautiful City.
