[ARCHIVED] Roanoke Parks and Recreation to Open Pools at Washington, Fallon Parks in Summer 2021

Roanoke, VA—After a one-year hiatus, Roanoke Parks and Recreation will reopen the Washington Park and Fallon Park pools this summer. The pools did not open the summer of 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. While there are still some safety restrictions in place, the pools will be in operation and open to the public.

“Having to keep the pools closed last year was very difficult in an already challenging year, so we are thrilled to be able to open them this summer,” Lauren Woodson, Community Recreation Coordinator, said. “Our department knows how important these facilities are to the citizens of Roanoke, and we are working hard to get them up and running.” The Department is in the process of hiring and training pool staff, and hopes to have the pools open by the beginning of June. However, this process depends on the Health Department’s approval, and they’re currently experiencing a surge in permit applications as COVID restrictions are eased.

Due to those restrictions, the pools will be operating at a 75% capacity limit (225 people per pool). Entrance to the pool will be on a first-come, first-served basis and patrons will be required to answer COVID-screening questions prior to admittance. Masks will be required when entering/exiting the facility, purchasing concessions, and when using the restrooms. All of these restrictions are subject to change. “Safety is our number-one priority this summer, so we will be adhering to all VDH guidelines. However, those seems to be rapidly changing, so we will adjust as restrictions change,” Woodson said.

Upon hearing the pools weren’t going to open in 2020, private citizens raised funds to ensure they would open this year. The money raised was given to the City and is being used for pool staff wages. The Department is grateful to its citizens for coming together during a difficult time to ensure their neighbors have access to safe and quality forms of recreation.
