August is Water Quality Month. To celebrate, the City's Stormwater Utility will be hosting a stream-monitoring session on Saturday, Aug. 17, at Brown Robertson Park. This event is free and open to the public; no registration is required. Stream sampling will start at 10 a.m. and finish around 1 p.m. Participants will engage in the stream by taking a sample of small insects that live on the bottom of the streambed. The abundance and diversity of insects in the streambeds are indicators of the ecological health.
Participants do not have to be a scientist to be a stream monitor; just be willing to learn and have fun. The City is also looking for new volunteers to join the Citizen Science Water Monitoring Program, which will begin training in September and can obtain more information about the program by attending this event.
