City Council Seeks Nominations for Citizen of the Year
The Council of the City of Roanoke invites nominations for the 2019 Citizen of the Year. Information describing the criteria and nomination form are available here and in the City Clerk’s Office, Room 456, Noel C. Taylor Municipal Building, 215 Church Ave. S.W., between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. All nominations must be submitted to the City Clerk's Office by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 28. Nominees must be City residents.
Reminder: Prepareathon to Take Place Aug. 31
Roanoke’s Prepareathon will be held on Saturday, Aug. 31, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Advance Auto Parts Atrium, inside Center in the Square. The event is free and open to the public, and will help citizens take an active role in protecting themselves and their community from disasters. Topics will include local flood hazards, why being prepared is important, and actions you can take at home, at school, at work, and at play to be ready. More information is available here.
Virginia Statewide Neighborhood Conference Coming to Roanoke
Residents are invited to register for the Virginia Statewide Neighborhood Conference, which will be held Thursday-Saturday, Sept. 12-14, at Hotel Roanoke and Conference Center. The conference will include information-packed workshops, engaging keynote speakers, neighborhood pride mobile tours, statewide neighborhood awards, networking receptions, exhibitions, and a component specifically designed for youth ages 13-18 years to help engage them in their communities called the Youth Café. New School Zone Speed Limit in Effect
In response to the recent ordinance approved by Roanoke City Council, effective Aug. 15 the speed limit decreased from 25 mph to 15 mph in certain neighborhood school zones in the City. The 15 mph speed limit reduction applies only during the times scheduled for school flasher operations, 30 minutes before and after established school start and end times. Drivers are encouraged to reduce their speed and watch for children when passing through school zones. Click here to see a list of schools and streets affected by the new speed limit.
