Prepareathon to Offer Disaster Readiness Information
Disasters don't plan, but you can! Citizens are invited to attend Roanoke’s Prepareathon on Saturday, Aug. 31, and take an active role in protecting yourself, your family, and your community from disasters. The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Advance Auto Parts Atrium, inside Center in the Square. Topics will include local flood hazards, why being prepared is important, and actions you can take at home, at school, at work, and at play to be ready. The event is free and open to the public. Carilion Ironman 70.3 Coming to Roanoke
In June 2020, Roanoke will welcome the Ironman 70.3 triathlon right here in the Valley. Participants will swim 1.2 miles in the clear waters of Carvins Cove Reservoir; bike 56 miles on a course that passes over the rolling hills of Botetourt County before returning to the heart of downtown Roanoke; and run 13.1 miles on the City’s greenway system. Many agencies worked to bring this international event to our region, and Roanoke is extremely proud of the part it plays in making Roanoke a desirable location. New Melrose Branch Library Opens, Hosts Events
In case you haven’t heard, the Melrose Branch Library opened at its new location, 2502 Melrose Ave., Suite D, on July 22, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The 15,000-square-foot space is now the second largest library in the City of Roanoke. Information about the Melrose Branch Library features is available here.
Roanoke Public Libraries has many activities planned at this new facility, including a special event at 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 29 titled “Indecent Histories,” featuring National Book Award winners Ibram X. Kendi and Justin Phillip Reed. The writers will discuss histories of inequity and discrimination, contemporary identity, and what community looks like for writers and people of color.
