Task Force to Host ‘Roanoke Remembers’ Event
At 5 p.m. on Sunday, July 14, the City’s Task Force to Reduce Gun Violence will host an event, “Roanoke Remembers: Healing the Wounds of Gun Violence in our Community,” at William Fleming High School in Dickinson Auditorium. Doors will open at 4 p.m. as a time for residents to bring photos of friends and loved ones whose lives have been lost by gun violence, to place on a memorial wall in the lobby of the school. City Adds New Regional Works to Public Art Collection
The City of Roanoke, through the Roanoke Arts Commission, recently purchased two works of art selected from the 2019 Roanoke College Biennial Art Exhibition: Lotus by Sarah EK Muse and We Used What We Had by Haden King. Muse’s work is a hand-formed copper in-relief tile with patina and King’s is an acrylic and charcoal on wood panel. These works have been added to the City’s Public Art collection. Roanoke Receives New Pacesetter Honors
The National Campaign for Grade-Level Reading recognized the City of Roanoke with Pacesetter Honors for the work done in 2018 through the Star City Reads initiative. Roanoke was recognized as a Pacesetter in all three of 2018’s categories, most notably for raising third grade reading proficiency rates. Since 2013, grade-level reading rates have improved from 65.1% to 74.2% for all Roanoke City Public Schools third graders, as measured by pass rates on the Virginia Standards of Learning reading exam.
