Roanoke Chosen as First-Ever Hall of Fame Winner
On Friday, June 7, the National Civic League announced their selection of the City of Roanoke as the first-ever All-America City Hall of Fame Winner. Roanoke has a long history with the All-America City Award, receiving this recognition for a record seven times. The Hall of Fame Award recognizes Roanoke’s continued work and advancement of the Star City Reads initiative, and the impact of Roanoke Public Libraries’ Feed and Read Program. Citizen Police Academy Starts in August
The next Citizen Police Academy will begin on Thursday, Aug. 1, at the Roanoke Police Academy, 5401-B Barns Ave NW. The Academy provides an opportunity for citizens to become familiar with the day-to-day operations of the Police Department, and gain a better understanding of the procedures, guidelines, responsibilities, policies, and laws that guide the Department’s decisions. Classes will meet from 6 to 9 p.m. in Room 216 at the Police Academy every Thursday night through Oct. 17; a light meal will be provided. There is no fee to participate, and you do not have to be a City resident. Participants must apply in advance using this link. City to Host Fireworks Event
Roanoke’s “Fireworks on the Fourth” event will take place at River’s Edge Sports Complex South on July 4. Festivities begin at 7 p.m. Bring your family and some lawn chairs or blankets, and enjoy food trucks, bouncy castles, face painting, and live patriotic music performed by Winds of the Blue Ridge. Fireworks begin at 9:15 p.m. More details are available here.
