Solid Waste Management Schedule Changes for the Week of July 4, 2022

City offices will be closed Monday, July 4, 2022, to observe the Independence Day holiday.  As a result, the following schedule will be in effect for collection of trash, bulk items and recycling during that week.

Residential/Commercial:

All residential/commercial solid waste collection (including, recycling, bulk and brush) will be delayed one day:

Monday Routes – Trash, “A” week single-stream recycling, bulk and brush will be collected on Tuesday

Tuesday Routes – Trash, “A” week single-stream recycling, bulk and brush will be collected on Wednesday

Wednesday Routes – Trash, “A” week single-stream recycling, bulk and brush will be collected on Thursday

Thursday Routes – Trash, “A” week single-stream recycling, bulk and brush will be collected on Friday

Roanoke Valley Libraries go Fine Free

The Roanoke Valley Libraries (RVL) Consortium, consisting of libraries in Botetourt County, City of Roanoke, City of Salem, and Roanoke County, is delighted to announce that effective July 1, 2022, there will no longer be fines for overdue library materials at any RVL branch. In addition, fines accrued prior to that date will be canceled. Patrons will be charged, however, for items that are lost or damaged while checked out.

USA Cycling in the Roanoke Valley

Reminder that USA Cycling will be in town this week holding their Amateur Road National Championships! Wednesday through Friday there will be trials and road races in Botetourt County. On Saturday July 2nd, the City of Roanoke will be hosting the Criterium, or a closed circuit, sprinters' race in downtown. Please expect to see an increase in cycling activities leading up to the event as participants practice the courses, as well as road closures and impacts on race days.

(Stoney Battery Road closed at Route 11) Residents only on Stoney Battery Road – No thru traffic. Route 11 Northbound lanes impacted to Hardbarger Road from 4am – 4pm Residents will be assisted by Botetourt County Sheriff, Virginia State Police and Course Marshals.

Thursday, June 30, 2022 and Friday July 1

Road Race – Base of Operations – Botetourt Sports Complex

(First race at 7am – 7:30pm) Note – No road closures – rolling competition with group and police escort Road impacts: Etzler Road, Catawba Road, Haymakertown Road, Breckinridge Mill Road, Lees Gap Road, Grove Hill Road, Blacksburg Road. 

Saturday, July 2, 2022

Criterium – Base of Operations – Downtown Roanoke
Roads impacted:  Church Avenue, 2nd, 3rd, Luck, Franklin and Jefferson. (First Street closed)
First race at 8:00am.  Last race ends at 6:15pm
Note – Road closures from 4am – 6:30pm (reopening all roads by 8:30pm)

6th Annual Tinker Creek Cleanup

Join us August 6, 2022, for our 6th Annual Deschutes Tinker Creek Cleanup sponsored by Deschutes Brewery and the City of Roanoke Stormwater Division! Choose between land and canoe based clean up along Tinker Creek and the Roanoke River. There are different physical activity levels between sites so choose according to your physical ability. Let us know if you would like to use your own canoe and if you will bring your own PFD (personal floatation device).  

On the day of the event, the kick-off meeting starts at 8AM in Fallon Park where crew work maps, information and supplies (gloves and cleanup supplies) will be handed out. 

Clean up participants will receive lunch and beverages hosted by Deschutes Brewery and a few extra goodies from the event sponsors, including a free t-shirt.
