Artist Call:  Submit Art on Welcome to Roanoke Theme

The Roanoke Arts Commission seeks exhibition-ready art for a 10-month exhibit in the Noel C. Taylor Municipal Building.  The exhibition, “Welcome to Roanoke: Images of a Compassionate, Diverse, and Welcoming Community,” will be curated by members of the RAC Collections Committee. Submissions by artists of all ages, backgrounds, and experience levels are welcome. Submissions due at midnight on Tuesday, Aug. 31. Click here for details

City to Offer Training for Neighborhood Organizations

This fall, the City will offer “Taking Your Organization to The Next Level,” a free training course led by Program Consultant Steve Hixon, designed to help neighborhood associations learn leadership development and skills to increase their group participation and increase capacity within their organizations. Facilitated by the City’s HUD Community Resources Division and the Office of Neighborhood Services, the training will consist of six virtual classes. Learn more here.  

Financial Empowerment Center Celebrates One Year Since Launch

The Roanoke Financial Empowerment Center, a program of the City of Roanoke in partnership with Freedom First Enterprises and the national nonprofit Cities for Financial Empowerment Fund, has helped Roanoke area residents reduce more than $375,000 of debt and save more than $65,000 since it opened last year. Vaccine Opportunities Available at Library Branches

Help us spread the word: There are a few more free COVID-19 Pfizer vaccine opportunities available between now and Sept. 8 at selected Roanoke Public Library branches. Walk-ins are welcome, or you can reserve your dose by making an appointment at (540) 613-6597 or go online here. Dates, times, and locations are as follows:   

  • Friday, Sept. 3, 2-4 p.m., Williamson Road Branch Library 
  • Tuesday, Sept. 7, 10 a.m.-1 p.m., Main Library 
  • Wednesday, Sept. 8, 3-5 p.m., Belmont Branch Library
