City Emphasizes Disaster Preparedness, Asks Public to Share Flood Stories
To recognize September as National Preparedness Month, the City of Roanoke, in partnership with WDBJ-7, will be promoting Roanoke’s Prepareathon campaign by posting online resources all month long on the City’s Facebook Page, and on the Roanoke Stormwater Facebook Page. In addition, special segments with information about how to prepare for disasters will be featured on WDBJ7 throughout the month. Also, to help educate citizens about the importance of flood preparedness, the City invites those impacted by the Flood of 1985 to share their story – let us know what happened, and what short- and long-term effects the event had on your life. Arches Project Celebrates Community Diversity on Roanoke River Greenway
The Arches, a new public art project under Memorial Bridge, is a re-imagined space that brings opportunities for community, art, and mindfulness. Neighbors from Mountain View, Norwich, Raleigh Court, and Wasena neighborhoods worked together on this project. To officially unveil the Arches, the Virginia Children's Theatre and the Roanoke Arts Commission are hosting a free family story time each Saturday in September. GO Fest to Focus on Smaller Events
This year GO Fest, which is put on by Roanoke Parks and Recreation in partnership with Roanoke Outside, will not happen in the traditional sense due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, organizers are excited to announce that the spirit of GO Fest will continue through a series of smaller, socially distanced events; the proceeds of which will go to Project Outside. Pedestrian Safety Campaign Ends, Feedback Invited
This summer, the City of Roanoke conducted a pedestrian safety campaign, “Every Corner is a Crosswalk,” to emphasize the importance for drivers to stop for pedestrians at painted and unpainted crosswalks, and for pedestrians to cross at the corner or a designated crosswalk. The Campaign wrapped up on Aug. 31. The City invites you to share your thoughts about the campaign and safety in the community at this link.
