The business license tax is assessed on each business operating in the City of Roanoke. A new business must obtain a business license prior to transacting any business. Business licenses must be renewed annually on or before March 1, and a renewal notice will be sent to each business.
When starting a new business, please contact the Commissioner of the Revenue's office at (540) 853-2524 or [email protected] so that your business will have the correct classification from the start. Also, we will be able to guide you to other offices and agencies to ensure that you register properly. This will help you avoid any problems after starting your business.

Going Out of Business
You may be entitled to a refund when closing your business in the City of Roanoke. Please submit a signed statement with the out-of-business date, the actual gross receipts for the time in business, and the address to which you would like the refund check mailed. Mail to:
