Chief Deputy

Major Mark A. SweetenbergChiefDeputySweetenbergM.A.

Major Mark Sweetenberg oversees the Administrative Division of the Roanoke Sheriff's Office, which includes the Professional Standards Unit, Payroll, Budgeting, Planning and Research and all contracts for the department. He started his career in 1987 as a Deputy and has 33 years with the Sheriff's Office. He has previously been a Tactical Team member, Honor Guard Leader, Professional Standards Unit Supervisor and Division Commander of both Jail Security and Support Services. Major Sweetenberg is the first African American Chief Deputy and is proud United States Army Veteran.

Assistant Chief Deputy

Major James "Chuck" Ferguson


Major Ferguson, Assistant Chief Deputy, is in charge of the Operations of the Roanoke Sheriff's Office. He oversees Jail Security, Support Services and Court Services Divisions, which he has served as a supervisor in all three over his 35 year career with the department. Major Ferguson began his career in 1985. He is a general instructor and has been the Commander of the Tactical Team for 21 years.

Professional Standards Unit Supervisor 

Lieutenant Brian Geiser


Lt. Brian Geiser serves at the Supervisor of the Professional Standards Unit. This Unit is comprised of internal investigations, accreditation, training, PREA and ADA compliance, planning and research, vehicle maintenance and hiring and background investigations. Lt Geiser began his career with the department in  and has served as both a Sergeant and Lieutenant in Jail Security and Support Services before transferring to Administration in 2012. He is also the proud pastor at First Christian Church of Vinton.
