Chief Deputy

Colonel James "Chuck" Ferguson


Colonel Ferguson, Chief Deputy oversees the Administrative Division of the Roanoke Sheriff's Office, which includes the Professional Standards Unit, Law Enforcement Unit, Planning and Research and all administrative duties to include budgeting, payroll, etc. Colonel Ferguson joined the department in 1985. During his 37 years he has served as a supervisor in multiple divisions within the department. He is the general instructor and has been the Commander of the Tactical Team for 23 years.

Assistant Chief Deputy

Lieutenant Colonel Jeffrey Jenkins 


Lt. Colonel Jenkins, Assistant Chief Deputy, is in charge of the Operations of the Roanoke Sheriff's Office. He oversees Jail Security, Support Services and Court Services Divisions. Lt. Colonel joined the department in 1995. During his 27 years he has served as a supervisor in both the Jail and Court Services divisions.  He is a graduate of West Virginia University and a retired Major, U.S. Army Reserve.

Professional Standards Unit Supervisor 

Lieutenant Brian Geiser

Lt. Geiser serves at the Supervisor of the Professional Standards Unit. This Unit is comprised of internal investigations, accreditation, training, PREA and ADA compliance, planning and research, vehicle maintenance and hiring and background investigations. Lt Geiser began his career with the department in  and has served as both a Sergeant and Lieutenant in Jail Security and Support Services before transferring to Administration in 2012. He is a DCJS certified General Instructor, VGIA certified Gang Investigator and a First Aid/CPR Instructor.  Lt. Geiser was a charter member of and represents the department on the Blue Ridge Interagency Council on Homelessness (BRICH) and is a member of the Western Region Jail Association (WRJA), and currently serves as the H.T. Leary Scholarship Committee Chairman. 

In his personal life, Lt. Geiser is an organist/pianist/choirmaster with over 38 years of experience in playing for and directing church music programs in the area.  He is a member of the American Guild of Organists (AGO) and a Fellow in the Guild of Gay Religious Musicians (GGRM) based in England.  Since 2001 he has served as the Senior Pastor of Vinton’s First Christian Church.  He volunteers with the Roanoke Rescue Mission and Feeding America Southwest Virginia Food Bank.  He is a proud Cat Dad to “Moo” and in his free time enjoys hiking, biking, working on cars, cooking, working out and boating on Smith Mountain Lake with his partner, Jeff.
