
Reinforcing the Thin Blue Line
The Roanoke Citizen Police Academy provides an excellent opportunity for citizens to gain a better perspective of the day to day operations of the Police Department. The academy is open to citizens who live and/or work in Roanoke, as well as family members of police officers. All participants are subject to a criminal background check. The Roanoke Police Department reserves the right to deny any persons with a criminal history. Applicants must be 21 years old or older.
Academy Topics
Academies are offered twice a year. Students meet 1 night a week from 6-9 p.m. for 12 weeks. Topics taught include:

- Firearms Training
- K-9 Demonstration
- Officer Ride-A-Long
- Professional Standards Unit
- Radar Enforcement
- Riot Control
- School Resource Officer (SRO)/D.A.R.E.
- Shooting Range
- Street Crimes Unit
- Tactical Response Team
- Tour 911 Center
- Traffic and DUI
- Uniform Patrols
