Purpose: To assist City Council in administering the City’s historic districts; to review new construction, modifications, and demolition in the historic districts; to preserve, protect, and encourage appropriate rehabilitation of the City’s designated historic, architectural, and cultural resources; to recommend for historic landmark status and historic district protection, significant historic, architectural and cultural landmarks, structures, and buildings in the City; and to provide architectural expertise to City Council and the administration when requested.
NOTE: See Chapter 36.1, Zoning, Article VII, Administration, Division 2, Architectural Review Board, Sec. 36.1-640, of the Code of the City of Roanoke (1979), as amended. The ARB will consist of seven members appointed by majority vote of City Council. Members shall hold no elected public office. At least two members, but not more than three, shall be registered architects. In making an appointment, City Council shall consider the appointee’s interest or competence in, or knowledge of, historic preservation and the history of the City. A stipend of $100.00 per month, or $1200.00 annually, is paid to members upon attainment of certification through the Virginia Certified Architectural Review Program. New members will be required to attain certification within one year of the date of appointment.
The certification requirement was suspended pursuant to Ordinance No. 36935-010305, until the Virginia Certified Architectural Review Board Program is established.
