The city’s greenway trail system has become one of its most treasured assets. There are some 18 miles of greenways within the city limits, ranging from paved paths to forest trails. The backbone of the system is the Roanoke River Greenway, which follows the river’s continuous course from Bridge Street SW to its connection to the Tinker Creek Greenway at the confluence of the Roanoke River & Tinker Creek to the east.

Other greenways trails include Lick Run, Murray Run, and Mill Mountain. Roanoke's greenway system is great for recreation, but they are also part of a broader long-range vision for wellness, economic development, conservation, social interaction, and alternative transportation.
