In September 2014, the Roanoke Police Department started a partnership with the Big Brothers Big Sisters Oliver Hill House where officers would come in at least once per week to help kids with their homework. Many of the kids had never had any positive interaction with a police officer. The program has led to four officers joining the organization as a Big Brother or Big Sister to a child. The initiative has been so successful that it expanded to the West End Center and the Community Youth Program at St. John's Episcopal Church where officers acted as tutors for kids in math, spelling, and English.
