The process outlined in this section is for the initial certification of a newly installed elevator or re-certification of an existing elevator.
Elevator certification is required before issuance of a certificate of occupancy for a newly constructed building and prior to any new elevator being placed in service to the public. View a

Recertification
Elevators must be re-certified every 12 months and approved for operation. Failure to comply with this required may result in the elevator being taken out of service. Recertifications of existing elevators need to be accompanied by the certification results and the elevator certification fee of $45.90
Fees
Fees are due at time of permit issuance. The fees for elevator certifications are as follows:
- Elevator Certification and Re-Certification Permit: $45.90 (renewed annually). Must be inspected by VA state qualified cross-connection device worker.
