City of Roanoke Engine and Equipment Idling Policy

July 1, 2004

The City of Roanoke recently entered into an Ozone Early Action Compact to reduce the levels of atmospheric ozone in the Roanoke valley. One effective and cost efficient method of reducing these ozone concentrations is to limit the amount of time vehicle and equipment engines idle (engine continues to run while vehicle is stationary). Engine idling not only produces up to twice the amount of exhaust emissions as an engine in motion, it wastes fuel (the cost of which is increasing daily), and is harmful to engines themselves because an idling engine isn’t operating at it’s peak temperature which results in incomplete fuel combustion, therefore creating soot and other deposits that damage the engine.

The City's Fleet Management Division and Office of Environmental Services, in conjunction with input from our public safety and other departments, have developed the Engine and Equipment Idling Policy regarding idling of vehicles and equipment in the city’s fleet.

One of the primary means of judging the effectiveness of this policy is by comparing city-wide pre and post-idling policy fuel consumption rates. Fleet management will be able to assist employees with the tracking of overall fuel consumption on a city-wide basis.

Please contact the Environmental Services office at 853-2425 if you have any questions.
