ROANOKE

We believe:

a designated, predictable funding source for our stormwater needs is now critical. We can no longer depend on short-term solutions to a long-term problem.

Roanoke’s Stormwater System

History | What can be done?

Solutions range from individual citizen participation to large-scale stormwater projects, but any real solution will require a reasonable level of funding and focused effort.

A few methods that can address the runoff problems include:
  • Funding of major drainage projects and upgrades
  • Construction of stormwater retention ponds and other facilities which will retain stormwater on-site
  • Use of alternative (or permeable) pavement that allows more water to soak into the ground
  • Installing plants and trees and other vegetation to capture rain water
  • More frequent street cleaning
  • Fabric fence use during construction to prevent sediment from entering the storm drains
  • “Green” (or planted) roof systems to minimize roof runoff
  • Keeping leaves, oil, and other chemicals out of the stormwater system

Solutions vary, but our stormwater system is past the point where small changes will have a sufficient impact. That said, it is important to encourage everyone to do his or her part.
