Roanoke Police Department Makes Arrest in Residential Robbery and Investigates Business Robbery

The Roanoke Police Department has made an arrest in a residential robbery that occurred on January 7, 2013, and is investigating a business robbery that occurred on the same date. In the business robbery, officers responded at 3:27 p.m. to Payday Title Loan located in the 2300 block of Orange Avenue, NE. Upon arrival they located a clerk who stated that the suspect entered the business, brandished a firearm and demanded money. The suspect did not fire any shots, but did obtain an undisclosed amount of money and fled. A witness who saw the suspect flee from the business stated that the suspect traveled on foot to the 1500 block of 22nd Street, NE. Officers searched the area, but did not locate the suspect. Officers remained in the area following their response to the business robbery, and at 6:38 p.m. an officer who was in the alley between the 1500 blocks of 22nd Street and 23rd Street heard loud noises and an individual yelling. The officer traveled on foot to the 1500 block of 22nd Street where he observed an individual who matched the description of the suspect from the earlier robbery at Payday Title Loan. The officer then lost sight of the individual but heard movement inside of a residence near the area where the individual was seen. Officers established a perimeter in the area. At the same time additional officers responded to a residence in the 1500 block of 22nd Street, NE in reference to a second robbery. The officers located the victim who stated that the suspect entered her residence, brandished a firearm and demanded money. The victim gave the suspect an undisclosed amount of money, and the suspect took another item belonging to the victim. The victim was not hurt, however the suspect damaged property inside of the victim’s residence and fired shots inside of the residence before he fled. The suspect description matched the description of the suspect from the robbery at the Payday Title Loan and the description of the individual the officer observed in the area. Officers later observed an individual in the 1500 block of 22nd Street, NE who matched the suspect description. That individual was apprehended and through the course of the investigation he was determined to be the suspect in the residential robbery. He is identified as Cody Robert Thurman, age 18 of Roanoke. Mr. Thurman was arrested and has been charged with one count of robbery, one count of use of a firearm in commission of a felony, and one count of shooting into an occupied dwelling in connection with the residential robbery. Through the investigation, officers also determined that the victim in the residential robbery is an acquaintance of Mr. Thurman. Charges are pending in the robbery that occurred at the Payday Title Loan.
