This Japanese (or Saucer) Magnolia is located in Elmwood Park near the intersection of Jefferson Street and Elm Avenue. It was brought to Roanoke in 1854 by Commodore Matthew Calbraith Perry. The Commodore opened the first trade relations with Japan during an expedition to the country in 1852-1854. He brought the sapling back from Japan and gave it to Colonel William Peyton who planted it at his home on the land that is now Elmwood Park.
