Red Maple (Acer rubrum)

The Red Maple is a deciduous shade tree that is beautiful in the fall. In the northern states, it grows naturally in wet areas, but in the south, it grows naturally in drier upland areas. It tolerates many soils, from clay to sandy loam. It is of moderate drought tolerance. Native to North America, this oval tree grows in sunlight and partial shade.

The tree grows rapidly and makes a good street tree (although it may grow girdling roots) The bark is easily damaged by mowing equipment, so the tree must be properly mulched. The tree can grow to a height of 75 to 80 feet and a spread of 40 feet. The small spring flowers are yellow or red. The fall leaves, ranging from yellow to orange to red, are often a spectacular sight.
