The City of Roanoke is initiating the process for the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to create a specialty license plate bearing the Roanoke brand identity for purchase. In order to do this, the DMV requires the city to collect 350 applications before requesting the creation of the plate.

Residents who are interested must send a completed DMV application form for the plates, along with a check or money order made payable to “City Treasurer, City of Roanoke,” to the City Treasurer’s Office, 215 Church Ave. S.W., Room 254, Roanoke, Va., 24011. A $35 return check fee will be applied for any check returned by the bank for:
    • stop payments
    • insufficient funds
    • refer to maker
    • accounts closed
Fees for the license plates are as follows: Once the applications have been submitted, the DMV indicates that nine months is the quickest turnaround possible. DMV requirements are as follows:
    • Receive prepaid applications, brand identity use agreement, and plate design. Review and approve plate design (8 weeks).
    • Submit plate design to vendor and receive prototype (6 to 8 weeks).
    • Emboss the prototype and receive approvals from DMV, the City of Roanoke, and State Police (when necessary) (8 weeks).
    • Order and receive the printing materials (8 to 10 weeks).
    • Applications processed, plates produced and mailed to customers (6 weeks).
