Pet Waste and Storm Water

Why should I pick up after my pet?
Pet waste is more than smelly and unsightly, it pollutes our storm water. Pet waste left on trails, sidewalks, streets, and grassy areas is flushed into the nearest waterway every time it rains. Like human waste, animal waste can contain harmful bacteria and viruses that make water unfit for drinking, swimming, fishing, or irrigation. Pet waste also contains nutrients which can cause excessive growth of algae in our streams and rivers.
What should I do with my pet's waste?
- Flush it: pick up the waste with a scooper and flush in a toilet.
- Toss it: place the waste in a plastic grocery bag, tie the end securely, and place the bag in your "big blue."
- Bury it: scoop the waste and bury it at least 6 inches in the ground away from gardens and water sources.
