National Night Out
Tuesday, August 5, 2008

The 25th Annual National Night Out is scheduled for Tuesday, August 5, 2008. Sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW), National night Out is the nation's largest, annual crime and drug prevention event, and is designed to:
  • Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness;
  • Generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime crime programs;
  • Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and
  • Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and active in preventing crime.

Neighborhoods throughout the nation come together to celebrate National Night Out with a variety of events and activities. Along with the traditional display of outdoor lights and front porch vigils, activities that have taken place in Roanoke's neighborhoods include: block parties, cookouts, ice cream gatherings, watermelon feasts, flashlight walks, and visits from local police, fire department, and city officials.

National Night Out has proven to be an effective, inexpensive and enjoyable program to promote neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships.
