Storm Drain Stenciling for Neighborhoods
In an effort to improve stormwater quality, Roanoke’s Office of Environmental Services is involving the public in a Storm Drain Stenciling initiative. Stencils are painted onto sidewalks near storm drains and bear an image of a fish and the message, “DUMP NO WASTE, DRAINS TO RIVER.” This simple message if effective because most people realize that storm drains are designed to keep streets and parking lots from flooding, but not everyone knows that storm drains carry untreated stormwater directly to local streams, the Roanoke River, Smith Mountain Lake, and eventually to Albemarle Sound on the North Carolina coast. Pollutants in stormwater -- litter, motor oil residue, dirt, lawn chemicals, pet waste, grass clippings, and leaves -- run off the land and paved surfaces and go directly into streams, upsetting the ecosystem and natural beauty of the waters used for sport and recreation.
The Storm Drain Stenciling initiative is part of a federally mandated stormwater permit obtained by the City to improve stormwater quality. We encourage all neighborhoods and organizations to help spread this simple message and raise public awareness. To participate in this initiative, contact the Office of Environmental Services at 853-2425.
