Tips to Keep Homes and Children Lead-Safe:

  • Test every child ages 12 months, 24 months or under age 5 for lead poisoning.
  • Feed your child a low fat diet rich in iron, calcium and vitamin C including fruit, green vegetables, lean meats and milk.
  • Use only cold tap water when preparing food and formula. Let water run if it has not been used for several hours.
  • Wash children’s hands, toys, pacifiers and bottles often.
  • Do not let children play in bare dirt—cover soil with grass, mulch or bushes.
  • Wipe shoes or take shoes off before entering the house. Work clothes should be washed separately for those employed in auto mechanics or construction.
  • Clean weekly—mop floors and wipe window sills with water to help control the dust.
  • Call (540) 853-5682 before remodeling for lead-safe remodeling information. If possible, children should stay elsewhere during renovations.
  • Tell others about the hazards of lead poisoning!
