Guide for Preventive Health Tests
The Department of Human Resources offers the following guide for preventive health tests outlining recommended screenings, and the ages and intervals at which they should be performed:
Tests for Males and Females
- Check-up – every 1 to 3 years until age 65, then annually
- Height/Weight – periodically
- Exams for Cancer – Every 3 years until age 50, then annually (Thyroid, Mouth, Skin, Lymph Nodes, Rectal (age 40+))
- Blood Pressure – Every 2 years or as recommended by your Health Care Provider
- Cholesterol – Every 5 years or as recommended by your Health Care Provider (until age 70)
- Hearing – Periodically
- Urinalysis – Periodically until age 50, then annually
- Dental – Yearly
- Vision/Glaucoma – Every 2 to 4 years until age 60, then every 2 years
- Colonoscopy – at age 50, then every 10 years
- Self Skin Exam – Monthly
- EKG – at age 35, baseline; at age 40, every four years
Tests for Males
- PSA – at age 40, annually for high-risk individuals; at age 50, annually
- Self Testicular – monthly
- Digital Rectal – at age 40, annually for high-risk individuals; at age 50, annually
Tests for Females
- Mammogram – at age 35, baseline; at age 40, annually
- Pap Smear – at age 18, every 1 to 3 years until age 65 or as directed by your Health Care Provider
- Bone Density – according to risk factors; at age 65, baseline
- Self Breast Exam – monthly
- Professional Breast Exam – at age 25, every 3 years
- Pelvic Exam – every 1 to 3 years
Immunizations
- Tetanus-Diphtheria – every 10 years
- Pneumonia – according to risk factors
- Influenza – optional or according to risk factors; at age 65, annually
The city’s Health Clinic offers free services to city employees such as sick visits, routine physical exams (including EKG), blood sugar tests, blood pressure checks, immunizations and TB tests. Work-related injuries also can be treated at no cost. Employees can have blood work performed at the clinic for a reasonable cost.
