Riverland/Walnut Hill Neighborhood Plan
Riverland and Walnut Hill are two neighborhoods that lie below Mill Mountain. Walnut Hill is perched on the lower portion of the mountain's northern hillside, while the Riverland neighborhood lies below it at the base of the mountain along the Roanoke River. Much of the area developed with single-family houses in the 1920s and continued through the first half of the 20th Century.
The neighborhoods are still comprised primarily of single-family houses and has a high homeownership rate. There is also a small village center and the Roanoke Memorial Hospital in the area. Walnut Avenue is a significant gateway to the City, as it connects to the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Mill Mountain Star via the Walnut Avenue Bridge over the Roanoke River. In addition, Riverland Road (Route 116) is increasingly generating more traffic and being used as a gateway to the City from the southeast.
Planning staff held public meetings with residents in the Fall of 2003 to gain input for the plan. The plan was adopted by City Council on July 19.
