Mission/Vision

Mission Statement
The mission of the Office of Environmental Management is to design, maintain, and continually improve a comprehensive program to facilitate the City’s compliance with applicable State and Federal regulations. We will encourage and foster broad employee and public support for, and engagement in, the development and maintenance of a sustainable, healthful, and aesthetically pleasing environment for the citizens Roanoke, and the surrounding area.

Vision Statement
The Office of Environmental Management will develop and maintain a centralized, uniform, and comprehensive environmental management program for the City. We will be prepared to seize opportunities to foster increased environmental awareness and stewardship throughout the Roanoke Valley. We will also establish ourselves as a well-respected and thoroughly integrated unit of City Government, whose mission, duties, and services are highly valued.

Responsibility

-Ensure the City’s ongoing compliance with environmental regulations

-Manage the implementation and maintenance of the City’s Environmental and Sustainability Management System (ESMS)

-Administer the City’s Stormwater program, which includes ensuring compliance with the stipulations of the City’s Stormwater permit

-Respond to spills and incidents within the City that threaten environmental health

-Support environmentally-based training for City employees

-Respond to citizen inquiries and concerns related to environmental issues
