City of Roanoke Planning Commission

The primary mission of the Planning Commission is to advise and assist City Council in promoting the orderly development of the city. Under the State Code of Virginia, the commission has primary responsibility for developing the plans and ordinances to guide future growth.

The Planning Commission serves as a sounding board for City Council in matters related to development issues. Its primary duties are to review and make recommendations to City Council on proposed amendments to the city's land development regulations (rezonings, zoning text amendments), street and alley closure requests and short- and long-range plans. Applications for these requests are available online:

The Commission serves as a catalyst and a liaison between citizens and City Council by presenting new ideas and calling attention to community problems or areas where policy direction is needed. In so doing, the Planning Commission evaluates the long-range impact of governmental actions and encourages reasonable and consistent city planning.

The Planning Commission holds public hearings on the 3rd Thursday of every month at 1:30 P.M. in the City Council Chambers, 4th floor of the Municipal Building. See the links on the left hand side of this page for schedule, agenda, and member information.
