Fire-EMS

This Department exists to protect and preserve the lives and property of residents and visitors of the City of Roanoke from damage or loss due to fire, medical emergencies, environmental hazards and traumatic accidents.

The Roanoke Fire-EMS Department operates from 12 stations located throughout the City of Roanoke, with administrative offices housed on the third floor of the newly constructed Station 1 located at the intersection of Franklin Rd. and Elm Avenue. The department is a full-service fire and emergency medical service agency, providing basic and advanced pre-hospital life support, fire prevention and education programs, fire suppression services, arson detection, vehicle extrication, and heavy tactical rescue; and supports a regional hazardous materials team.

Historic Station 1 located at 13 Church Avenue in downtown Roanoke remains open for tours. To schedule a tour, call 853-5785.

Our customers are every citizen and visitor to the City of Roanoke. We serve a resident population of 94,911 in an area of 43 square miles. Roanoke Fire-EMS responds to a total of approximately 18,000 emergency calls per year; 2,500 fire and 15,500 EMS.

Roanoke Fire-EMS holds a Class 2 rating from the Insurance Service Organization, the highest rating given to a Virginia fire department, and one of only 5 such ratings awarded in the state. This rating helps our community by bringing lower insurance rates to homeowners and businesses. Roanoke Fire-EMS is also an Internationally Accredited Agency. The Department was first accredited in 2002 and just received accreditation once again in 2007.

The Department believes in fire prevention and public education. To schedule a visit from the firefighters or to tour a station, contact the Education Information Specialist at 853-5785.
