Lick Run Greenway
X
The Lick Run Greenway takes its visitors all over Roanoke — from Brown-Robertson and Booker T. Washington parks to Hotel Roanoke and downtown. Going to an event at the Civic Center? Lick Run can take you there too. Users can start their journey on the Lick Run Greenway at the 581 overpass near Valley View Mall and find themselves next to scenic Lick Run Creek in minutes. Once downtown, users will be able to get on the Mill Mountain Greenway in Elmwood Park and go to Mill Mountain and the Blue Ridge Parkway. The future of the Lick Run Greenway may take it north towards William Fleming High School as well as east from the downtown routes to Tinker Creek Trail.
Roanoke River Greenway
X
The Roanoke River Greenway at Smith Park has been a popular route for bikers in the region for some time and links Wasena and Smith parks. Users can enter this greenway from Elm Avenue and Franklin Road, allowing them to bypass heavy traffic. Future plans include using the Roanoke River Greenway to link Piedmont and Rivers Edge parks and expanding west toward Salem.
Murray Run Greenway
X
Roanokers use the Murray Run Greenway often and it's easy to see why -- it currently links Patrick Henry High School with the surrounding neighborhoods and Virginia Western Community College. Future plans include developing Murray Run so it links with five Roanoke schools.
Mill Mountain Greenway
X
The Mill Mountain Greenway, completed in 2003, begins in Elmwood Park behind Roanoke's main library. Users who go north on this trail through downtown will connect to the Lick Run Greenway and head toward the Roanoke Civic Center, Hotel Roanoke, Lick Run Creek and Valley View Mall. Traveling south from Elmwood Park allows users to explore the rich history of some of Roanoke's oldest neighborhoods before hiking onto Mill Mountain and the Blue Ridge Parkway. This greenway is a experience like no other in the region. From the highly active spaces of Roanoke's downtown, the trail eventually flows parallel next to the Roanoke River, into charming neighborhoods, along a historic roadway, through mountainous terrain and finally onto one of the nations most visited and beautiful national parks.
Tinker Creek Greenway
X
The Tinker Creek Greenway is designed to connect greenspaces north of the Roanoke River and eventually join the Carvin's Cove Natural Reserve. When the connection is made, the Tinker Creek Greenway will be the primary link between Carvin's Cove and the Blue Ridge Parkway. A 1.5-mile portion of the trail is currently developed with plans for much more. Once completed, users will hopefully be able to travel along Tinker Creek and several parks towards Hollins University.
