Our mission is to foster stable economic growth in the City of Roanoke and provide continuous improvements to the quality of life for its citizens. Implementing innovative workforce and business retention, expansion and recruitment practices and promoting strategic asset developments city-wide will ensure our community and economy remain diverse and vibrant.
The Department of Economic Development acts as a liaison and a resource to the many facets that influence our constantly evolving economy.
Through our rigorous business visitation programs (BIZVIZ and BIZBREAK) we engage with the entire spectrum of the business community to keep informed of real conditions affecting stability and growth. We provide ongoing customized assistance to our businesses and keep them informed of city and state benefits for which they may be eligible. Also, since growing businesses need a growing and well trained workforce, the department provides Career & Lifestyle Fairs where job-seekers can meet with prospective employers.
In addition to business and workforce facets of the economy, Economic Development must reach beyond the 8-hour workday and into the “other 16 hours” of the day which influence our citizens’ quality of life and which keeps and promotes the City of Roanoke as a quality place to visit, live, play and invest. We implement strategies and programs to ensure our community assets evolve to meet the demands of our innovative and creative citizenry and attract more of the same to the City of Roanoke! Our Public Arts Program and the Roanoke Arts Commission are examples of our efforts in the advancement of arts and culture.
