WiFi Project
Background In the summer of 2003, the City
of Roanoke, New
Century Technology Council, and Downtown
Roanoke Inc. developed a partnership to create one of the
first free, wireless Internet access zones in the Commonwealth
of Virginia. The
wireless zone is centered within the Market Square area of
downtown Roanoke with coverage available outdoors in one to two
blocks in all directions. The network utilizes the 802.11b standard for wireless
communications, with speeds up to 11 Mbps. Through an agreement with Downtown Roanoke Inc., Cox Communications provides support and internet bandwidth. Cisco Systems helped provide resources for the
deployment of the network.
Whether sitting at a park bench or eating at an outdoor
cafe, a student, office worker or tourist can access the Internet
if they are within the wireless coverage area.
Wireless coverage expanded to Elmwood Park in the spring of 2004.
