CRIME PREVENTION THROUGH CODE ENFORCEMENT

On July 1, 2006, the City of Roanoke, in partnership with the Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney, implemented several new code enforcement initiatives that fight crime by improving the City’s ability to address nuisance properties. This program recognizes that crime increases in neighborhoods where nuisance violations occur and go unchecked. For additional information on this exciting program, visit Crime Prevention through Code Enforcement.

PROMOTING CLEAN NEIGHBORHOODS

The Code Enforcement Office staff is comprised of clerical, inspectors, and administrative personnel. Together, we are responsible for upholding various codes and ordinances that promote clean, safe, and attractive neighborhoods. The city codes and ordinances have been adopted by Roanoke City Council.

Each inspector is assigned to a specific zone within the city, and is responsible for investigating complaints and initiating investigations on violations he or she observes in that area. Complaints are generally answered within 24 hours. Emergencies that present a threat to the health and welfare of the community are handled immediately. Complaints and follow-up investigations on previously written violations have the highest priority.

TO REPORT A VIOLATION IF YOU WERE CITED...
If you were cited for a violation and would like to speak with an inspector, please call the Code Enforcement Office at 540-853-2344. Our goal is to obtain voluntary compliance. Most reasonable requests for extra time or for referrals for special assistance are granted, whenever possible.
WHY DOES IT TAKE SO LONG?
To guarantee fairness to all parties involved, the city is required to notify property owners of violations and provide time for the violations to be abated. It may take several weeks for the process to play out before the violation is actually corrected. During this time, the city is actively pursuing correction of the violation, and we appreciate your patience.
