Riverland and Walnut Hill are two well established neighborhoods that lie below Mill Mountain. Walnut Hill is perched on the lower portion of the mountain's northern hillside, while the Riverland neighborhood lies below it at the base of the mountain along the Roanoke River. Most of the land has a moderate to steep grade. Much of the area developed with single family houses in the 1920s and continued through the first half of the 20th Century. The neighborhoods are still comprised primarily of single-family houses and have a high homeownership rate. There is also a small village center and the Roanoke Memorial Hospital in the area. Walnut Avenue goes through the center of this area and is a significant gateway to the City, especially to tourists, as it connects the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Mill Mountain Star and parkland to the City via the Walnut Avenue Bridge across the Roanoke River.
