The Discovery Center creates an awareness and appreciation of Mill
Mountain’s beautiful natural resources via environmental education exhibits,
programs and classes. More than 140 programs on wildlife,
geology, ecology, mountain flora, fauna, natural history and human impact have
been offered in the past two years thanks to our professional staff and
dynamic partnerships. We would love for you and your family to
make yourselves at home at The Discovery Center and find out about the
natural wonders in our own backyard!

What Goes Bump in the Park? Night Hike
(All Ages) Although Halloween is nearly here, there is no need to be scared on this fun hike. Let your eyes and ears adjust to the dark and enter the world of owls, raccoons, toads, and other nocturnal animals that venture out at night. This hike is an excellent family activity and a way to introduce children to this fascinating aspect of nature. Discover what goes on when the lights go out. Registration deadline is Oct. 20. $5

Fall Foliage Hike
(All Ages) The Appalachian Mountains are known world wide for their beautiful fall colors. You and your family will enjoy a fun hike on Mill Mountain while learning about trees and their brilliant display of colors. Registration deadline is Nov. 3. $5

History, Lore and Legends of Mill Mountain
(18+) Long before the Roanoke Star people have been drawn up the mountain's steep slopes. You are invited to explore the past and discover how Mill Mountain has played an important role in Roanoke's past and present. You'll be amazed at what kind of history this mountain holds. Nature Movie Night
(All Ages) Pack up the family and head to the Mill Mountain Discovery Center for a fun night out. Bring a blanket or pillow to settle in and enjoy a family-friendly nature movie. Popcorn and drinks are provided. Deadline to register is Nov. 17. $5

Mountain Bike Patrol gets rolling in Mill Mountain Park
A Mountain Bike Patrol has recently begun in Mill Mountain Park thanks to over 20 volunteer cyclists. Dick Howard, Volunteer Patrol Director, began the bike patrol through Roanoke Parks and Recreation and the International Mountain Bike Association. The bike patrol consists of dedicated well trained volunteers that assist, educate and inform all trail users in order to enhance their recreational experience. Look forward to seeing the patrol members on Mill Mountain and other area trails in the future.

A free monthly outdoor adventure club for families in the Roanoke Valley. We showcase a different park each month, provide special speakers, and point families to local volunteer efforts. (6-10) This fun-filled Nature's Classroom will take your students out on the trails of Mill Mountain. We will be exploring the forest while collecting items for our nature craft. Registration deadline is Oct. 23. $5
