Alarm Registration Program
The ordinances for maintaining fire and/or security alarms were revised October 19, 2007. Take note of the new fee structures.
In an effort to enhance public safety and reduce the number of false alarms responded to by officers, City Code regulates the operation of security and fire alarms. Many calls for police service are false alarm calls, which often prevent officers from responding to other calls for service. All commercial business security and fire alarms in Roanoke must be registered with the city. Once registered, up to five false alarm responses are provided to business owners in a given year at no charge. Six or more false alarms within a given year will result in a fee for each incident. The fees, which are listed below, are part of an ongoing effort to enhance public safety and reduce the unnecessary expenditure of public resources used when responding to false alarms. While it is important to respond to security alarms, false alarms distract public safety officers from addressing real emergency situations, and increase the risk of injury to citizens, firefighters and police.
False Alarm Fees
False alarm fees for registered permit holders:
First through fifth false alarms in one year – No Charge
Sixth and subsequent false alarms in one year - $100 each
False alarm fees for non-registered users:

All commercial business alarms must be registered with the city. Fees are only required to be paid once a year for both fire and security alarms.
Alarm System User Permit: $25 each year for each location (Limit for this fee is three locations.)
$100 for four or more locations
Alarm Company Operator:

*Payment of registration fees is required only one time each year for both security and fire alarms systems.
To reduce your chances of triggering a false alarm
Instruct everyone who has a key to your business or home on how to operate the alarm and cancel false alarms.
Secure all windows and doors before turning on the alarm system. Drafts that move plants or curtains are common causes of false alarms. Avoid triggering the alarm’s sensors by securing helium filled balloons. If possible, do not let pets roam free in the home or business when the system is activated. Notify your security company immediately if you think your alarm system is not working properly.
